?Prohibition of discrimination? (Article 14 and Article 1 of Protocol 12) |

According to Article 14, you cannot be discriminated against by public authorities on any grounds, for example, because of your skin colour, sex, language, political or religious beliefs, or origins.
If a person feels discriminated against at the workplace, on the street, because of his/ her sex, religion, etc., he/she cannot complain only by referring to Article 14.
Article 14 can only be referred to with the other provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights and its protocols. For instance if you have been denied the right to private and family life because of your ethnicity, both Article 8 (the right to respect for private and family life) and Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination) have been violated. |

Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right includes freedom to have opinions and to receive information and ideas. This means both in letters, newspapers, e-mails, pictures, arts, etc. Freedom of expression is an important principle of democracy. Not only positive information and ideas can be freely expressed. But also chocking and dangerous thoughts. In fact, without any tolerance and pluralism, there is no democratic society. |

Right to life (Article 2) |
|
Everyone has the right to life. The right to life is the most basic human right. Therefore this right is first mentioned in the Convention. But in the old days and in other places, life of the individual was not the most important. More important was the survival of the group. Many communities expelled people who did not contribute to the production of necessities. For instance, old people were expected to take their own life so that they were not a burden for the group.
